Dr Kevin Keane

Dr Kevin Keane
Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Kevin is a Paramedic and Patient Safety Specialist with St John Ambulance Western Australia, where he also teaches in the Bachelor of Paramedicine and contributes to the Curtin Medical School. He transitioned into paramedicine in 2021 after nearly two decades as an academic, bringing research expertise in human clinical data analysis, reproductive medicine, endocrinology, and biochemistry. Kevin has published 58 peer-reviewed articles (4,300+ citations, h-index 27), supervised more than 20 research students—including two PhD completions, one as primary supervisor—and currently co-supervises a paramedic PhD project. He has received faculty research awards, secured competitive funding and scholarships, and regularly reviews for international journals. Kevin has also served as a National Director with the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR). Building on his scientific background, he is now extending his research into emergency medical services, with a focus on obstetrics and alternative care pathways, while supporting student development through simulation-based education.

Area of research: Endocrinology and Biochemistry, Obstetrics, Emergency Medical Services, Alternative Pathways, Patient Safety, Simulation-Based Education

Are you currently taking students? Yes

What supervision do you provide? Honours; Masters; PhD; Co-supervisor

Supervision approach: Kevin’s approach to student supervision is student-centred and evidence-informed, focusing on fostering critical thinking, reflective practice, and hands-on skill development. He supports students to integrate theoretical knowledge with clinical application, encourages independent inquiry, and provides mentorship that builds confidence in decision-making. Through a combination of structured guidance, constructive feedback, and opportunities for experiential learning, Kevin cultivates an environment where students can safely explore, learn from mistakes, and develop professional competence in both paramedicine and research contexts.
