The Department of Health plays a critical role in the Victorian health system and is responsible for shaping it to meet the health needs of all Victorians. We’re focused on supporting Victorians to be as healthy as they can; whether through alerting them to seasonal risks like thunderstorm asthma, notifying them of contact with communicable diseases, safeguarding their drinking water, developing the best health, wellbeing and care facilities in the world, being at the forefront of mental health and wellbeing treatment or accelerating medical research. It’s all part of the way we partner with the community to help every individual lead a healthy life.

About the role:

The Chief Paramedic Officer (CPO) is a senior clinical leader within the Governance, Strategy and Research branch, responsible for providing authoritative paramedicine expertise to support Safer Care Victoria's (SCV) strategic priorities and system-wide safety and quality improvement agenda.

The role requires a minimum of 15 years' experience as a practising registered paramedic, including recent clinical practice within a state or territory jurisdictional ambulance service, ensuring that advice, leadership, and strategic direction are grounded in current paramedicine standards, regulatory requirements, and contemporary models of care. The CPO must maintain clinical currency within their organisation and credentialing, enabling meaningful engagement with frontline practitioners, consumers, and system partners.

Drawing on your experience across clinical care, senior leadership, and professional advocacy, the CPO provides high-quality strategic advice to SCV and the broader health system on issues that affect paramedicine practice, workforce capability, emerging risks, and opportunities for improvement. The role contributes to SCV's stewardship of clinical governance by offering informed guidance on paramedic-related policy, practice, education, and workforce considerations.

Working alongside the other Clinical Chiefs at SCV, the CPO serves as a key conduit between SCV and the paramedicine profession. The role leads professional engagement activities, fosters collaborative partnerships, and strengthens the conditions for safe, high-quality paramedic care. The CPO drives and supports initiatives that enhance workforce sustainability, improve patient outcomes, and embed contemporary paramedic expertise into system learning, capability building, and state-wide improvement efforts.

The CPO also plays a critical role in representing SCV in cross-government, sector, and professional forums, contributing to the development of statewide policy and advocating for system improvements informed by lived clinical experience, evidence, and the voice of the paramedic workforce.
