College awarded WA Suicide Prevention Grant to support paramedic mental health

The College is pleased to announce it has been awarded a Western Australian Suicide Prevention Grant, funded by Suicide Prevention Australia and the Western Australia Mental Health Commission.

This funding will support a pilot program delivering fully subsidised Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training to Western Australian paramedics and student paramedics. The College will deliver this initiative in partnership with HSE Global, a leading Australian risk management company, and Dr Matthew Warren-James, a paramedic and MHFA consultant. MHFA is an accredited, evidence-based program that builds mental health literacy and equips participants to recognise and support people experiencing mental illness or suicidal distress.

Paramedics are uniquely positioned to identify and deliver early intervention in suicide-related crises. This training will strengthen their ability to provide timely and informed support not only to their patients, but also to one another. The demanding nature of working as a paramedic, combined with stigma around seeking help, highlights the urgent need for tailored mental health initiatives.

The College anticipates this pilot will lay the groundwork for a sustainable model with the potential for national rollout.

Applications will open to Western Australian paramedics and student paramedics later this year. Register your interest here.
