The Australasian College of Paramedicine (the College) is the peak professional body representing paramedics in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. The College seeks expressions of interest (EOIs) from suitably qualified individuals to join the Editorial Board in the role of Deputy Editor(s) for its new international paramedicine journal.

The new Journal is an evolution of the College’s existing journal, which has an 18-year history of international scientific publishing in paramedicine. The new Journal will publish high-quality international peer-reviewed research in the field of paramedicine and associated clinical, health, and disaster management areas, encompassing a broad range of methodologies, including qualitative research.

The Journal Editorial Board will be international in its representation to match the Journal’s international focus; we are therefore actively encouraging EOIs from the key paramedicine research regions such as Australasia, UK, North America, Europe, and Asia.

The Journal’s Editor-in-Chief is Associate Professor Paul Simpson, from Western Sydney University, Australia. The Deputy Editors, together with Paul as Editor-in-Chief, will form the Journal’s leadership team, evolving the Journal’s identify and determining its strategic direction. This leadership team will be supported by an international advisory group and backed by a major international journal publishing partner.

The establishment of the Journal represents an exciting and unique opportunity to contribute to the College’s ongoing commitment to enhancing research and evidence-based practice within the paramedicine discipline. The Deputy Editors will work with the Editor-in-Chief to deliver a high-quality, paramedic-led, international peer-reviewed journal.

Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with the Editor-in-Chief to actively contribute to the overall direction for the Journal through strategic planning and implementation

• Engage with an international Editorial Advisory Board to ensure robust governance

• Work with the Editor-in-Chief to ensure workflow and process accountability and performance

• Actively contribute to the establishment and maintenance of editorial policies and procedures

• Ensure a transparent, fair, and equitable manuscript submission and peer-review system

• Make editorial decisions with reasonable speed and communicate them in a clear and constructive manner

• Liaise with and report to the Editor-in-Chief

• Implement and oversee continuous quality improvement

• Lobby within the discipline and associated disciplines, domestically and internationally, to promote the Journal and attract high-quality submissions.

Applicants should ideally possess:

• Academic qualifications at the post-doctoral level

• A demonstrated record of accomplishment in research and/or scholarly engagement

• High-level knowledge in areas relating to the Journal’s subject matter and disciplinary content

• Excellent critical appraisal skills across broad research methodologies

• Excellent organisational and strategic planning skills

• Excellent time management skills

• Ability to dedicate the requisite time to journal activities (approximately 5-10 hrs per week)

• Direct paramedicine and research experience in Australasia, UK, Ireland, North America, South Africa, or Asia.

Deputy editorial experience in medical or health journal publishing is desirable, but not essential.

An annual honorarium will be available to the successful applicants.

The successful applicant(s) would be expected to assume their role in June 2022 and commit to an initial term of two (2) years. The Deputy Editors would be subject to annual performance review against agreed performance indicators.
