Research: Prevalence of Burnout in Graduate Paramedics

Researchers at Charles Sturt University are recruiting participants for a study on the "Prevalence of Burnout in Graduate Paramedics".

They're seeking graduates who have completed their learning, such as a bachelor’s degree, diploma or vocational training, awarded by an Australian education provider, and who have gained employment from 2020. Employment location does not exclude participation in this research, with researchers seeking involvement from paramedics based in remote, regional and metro areas within Australia.

Purpose of the study:

Previous research has shown that the attrition rate for paramedics and healthcare workers is at a significant level. This issue has become more relevant since the COVID-19 pandemic, when many healthcare workers are found to be leaving their profession in as few as three to five years. The reasons behind this stem from a number of differing factors.

This study will focus on paramedic burnout and the prevalence it has on paramedic graduates, and their intention to stay or leave the profession. The aim is to identify if burnout is occurring in paramedics who have commenced employment since 2020. Is burnout a contributing factor to the declining retention rates of paramedics? The results of this study may contribute to informing education providers about the significance of burnout and make suggestions about the content of course curriculum.

The survey should take no more than 10 minutes and includes demographic questions followed by a questionnaire which has been previously tested to measure burnout. For the purpose of this study, we are using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), which is the gold standard in assessing burnout levels. The MBI is a validated tool used to measure the burnout levels among healthcare providers.

There is a further option to take part in a 1-on-1 interview to discuss your experiences working as a paramedic, associated burnout, and continued employment as a paramedic. Interviews can be conducted face-to-face or via Zoom, and you are able to stop the interview at any time.
