Research Symposium 2024 was hosted on the 18th and 19th of July, at Australian Catholic University, Brisbane campus. This symposium’s theme, “Influence and Inspire: Advancing the Paramedicine Research Agenda for Australasia,” reflects our commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in paramedic research. The goal of this symposium was to highlight the crucial role of paramedic research in shaping and advancing emergency care.

In the line of duty: Seat belt utilisation and ambulance safety risks for paramedics

This research investigates the seat belt utilisation and safety risks paramedics face during ambulance operations. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected using a convergent mixed methods approach to understand paramedic seat belt usage, ambulance accidents, and injuries. Preliminary findings from 311 paramedics reveal varying seat belt usage patterns based on patient acuity. While many paramedics wear seat belts as drivers (87.5%) and passengers (84.03%) in ambulances, usage decreases in rear-facing seats and further with stable or critical patients. Accident rates are concerning, with 40% of participants reporting involvement in accidents.

Biography: Lyle Brewster

Lyle has 34 years of experience as a paramedic and an educator with two different ambulance services and Charles Sturt University. Lyle began his career with the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade (QATB) 1989. He spent 14 years with QAS. In 2005, Lyle moved to New Zealand, where he worked for St John Ambulance. He received his intensive care paramedic qualification and spent four years in the rescue helicopter and education. Lyle has a Master's in Health Science, a Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management and a Bachelor's Degree in Health Science (Paramedic). He is a PhD candidate at CSU.
