Presented by Dr Ken Wishaw Mild hypothermia in trauma is associated with significantly increased morbidity and mortality. It is far easier to prevent rather than treat the condition, so it is best aggressively managed prior to arrival at hospital. Much of the detection prevention and management of hypothermia is poorly understood. This presentation will outline the problem, the underlying physics and physiology and treatment options for its minimization.

Biography:

Ken Wishaw is a retired specialist anaesthetist. He was Australia’s first full-time rescue helicopter doctor and co-founder of CareFlight in Sydney. He served as instructor and course director for the College of Surgeons “Early Management of Severe Trauma” course, and course director at Sydney and Brisbane medical simulator centres. Ken recently retired from the Army Reserve where he was senior anaesthetist in the deployable Army hospital and served in Afghanistan in 2009. He authored the defence force policy on management of hypothermia in the battle casualty. He is now adjunct professor at the school of paramedic Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
