Introduction to ECG Interpretation

About

Presented by Matt Avery, ICP and ECP Specialist

The interpretation of an ECG can be a powerful tool to aid diagnosis and determine appropriate treatment and transport options for patients in the prehospital environment. This session will start with a review of cardiac electrophysiology including conduction pathways and link this to the normal ECG. Waves, intervals and segments of the ECG will be explored and their role in dysrhythmia interpretation will be explained. Atrial, junctional and ventricular dysrhythmias will be covered including a basic review on causes and treatment of dysrhythmias. The presentation will be an open forum, feel free to ask any questions or bring along any ECGs that you have questions about.

Matt Avery has been an Intensive and Extended Care Paramedic Specialist with NSW Ambulance for 11 years and is currently studying medicine at the University of Western Australia. As an Intensive Care Clinical Educator, Matt delivered the state cardiac reperfusion training program where he developed an interest in teaching pragmatic approaches to ECG interpretation. Matt currently holds a Bachelor of Paramedic Practice, Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Paramedic Science and a Cert. IV in Training and Assessment.
