Medical errors and adverse events can occur. Clinical excellence is dependent on a reliable, resilient healthcare system that captures clinical incidences when the patient's management did not go as planned. Lessons should be learned in a non-blameworthy culture. This talk will establish why paramedics should have a clear understanding of the critical importance of Patient Safety & Quality in order to deliver safe, reliable, patient-centred care. The concepts of Clinician Disclosure, Open Disclosure and 2nd Victims will be explored.

Biography:

Dr Sharon Anne McAuley, MBBCH, BAO, DCH, MSc, FRCPCH, FRACP, is a Senior Medical Officer at the Children’s Emergency Department at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, Brisbane. She is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland (UQ) and Deputy Chair of the Queensland Paediatric Quality Council (QPQS) and en ex-chair and a current member of the Queensland Children's Critical Incident Panel (QCCIP). Dr McAuley undertook her specialist training mainly in Cambridge and London, UK and Brisbane, Australia. She has 20 years experience in paediatrics and has a particular interest in Patent Safety and Quality, Clinical Audit, Resilience & Well-being and Education.
