Paramedics are in a unique position where they are welcomed into people's homes in a time of crisis. This allows Paramedics to play an essential part in identifying and assisting people who are vulnerable,and at risk of harm.

Vulnerability can occur in many different forms, which can include but is not limited to family harm, violence, elder abuse, neglect and non accidental injury. The delivery of clear and concise education and the importance of factual documentation is necessary to enable the referral of vulnerable people to agencies that can assist. With this knowledge, the identification, assessment and care of people in the community who are vulnerable.

This presentation will focus on the role of the Paramedic to identify vulnerability including what to look for with your eyes wide open, the importance of documentation and referral of these patients.

Byron is a Clinical Support Officer for St John, New Zealand. Celeita Williams is an Intensive Care Paramedic and lecturer at AUT University in New Zealand.
