In the early 2000s there was a focus in the UK on redesigning and modernising urgent and emergency care. The promise of the right skill, right time and right place across the spectrum of acuity led to Australian and New Zealand ambulance jurisdictions looking for better ways to manage rising demand for ambulance services. In 2007 NSW Ambulance launched Australia's first Extended Care Paramedic (ECP) program. This presentation will discuss the journey of extended care paramedicine over the past decade discussing challenges (and learnings) and future opportunities.

Biography:

Dr Jason Bendall is a specialist anaesthetist and prehospital and retrieval medicine physician living and working in Newcastle NSW. Jason is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Paramedicine at Charles Sturt University and the University of the Sunshine Coast. Jason is also a casual Intensive Care Paramedic and was the foundation Program Manager for the NSW Ambulance Extended Care Paramedic program. Jason is Commissioner for St John Ambulance (NSW).
