Palliative paramedicine: An interrupted time series analysis of pre-hospital guideline efficacy in Victoria, Australia
Paramedics increasingly support palliative care delivery in the community, yet the impact of clinical guidelines on their decision-making is unclear. This retrospective cohort study examined 31,579 palliative care patients attended by paramedics in Victoria (2014–2023) to evaluate the effects of a new palliative care guideline. While supportive medication use remained stable, non-transport to hospital increased significantly post-implementation, particularly among patients with pain and those attended after-hours. These findings suggest the guideline supported more community-based care and reduced unnecessary hospital presentations, highlighting the evolving role of paramedics in palliative care systems.
