Declining ambulance offload delays in the post-COVID era: An interrupted time series analysis
This study examined ambulance offload delays and emergency department (ED) length of stay (LOS) across three COVID-19 periods (pre-, during, and post-pandemic) at a major Melbourne health service. Using interrupted time-series analysis of over 529,000 presentations, we found post-COVID improvements in offload times but sustained increases in ED LOS, especially for admitted patients. These findings highlight the need for targeted solutions such as offload coordination and improved discharge pathways to reduce ongoing ED crowding.
