Australasian College of Paramedicine International Conference (ACPIC24)
ACPIC 2024 delivered a wide range of clinical and research sessions from experts and leaders in paramedicine. Hosted in Sydney (September 2024) the program was designed to inspire, educate and broaden horizons.
Conference theme: Paramedicine's evolution – Embracing the new era
Practice makes perfect - using simulation to develop ECG interpretation skills in paramedicine students
Simulation-based education, rooted in aviation, is now integral in health professions education, enhancing clinical competence and patient safety. Interpreting 12-Lead ECGs is essential for paramedics, yet specific educational strategies to master complex rhythms are lacking. This study assessed the impact of weekly simulation sessions on improving paramedicine students' ECG interpretation skills. A retrospective analysis of data from 2019-2024, involving 304 students and 1,251 scenarios, showed significant performance improvements in most years. Findings suggest that frequent simulation practice may enhance ECG interpretation skills in paramedicine students.
