Epidemiology and transport outcomes of syncope presentations to an EMS

This retrospective cohort study sought to describe the epidemiology of adult syncope presentations within an emergency medical service and the associated transport outcomes of these presentations. From almost 2.5million patients over 4 years, syncope accounted for almost 2% of all presentations. Despite more than half of all presentations being over the age of 55, less than 33% received a 12-lead ECG. Almost 80% of all presentations were transported to hospital, with an overall re-presentation rate of 0.5%. An improved understanding of patients presenting with syncope could help paramedics to better risk-stratify patient provide them with more efficient alternative care pathways.
