Developing advanced practice paramedic capability framework: A scoping review

This literature review found there is a critical need for a structured capability framework for advanced practice paramedics (APPs) in Australia, where a national standard is currently absent. By analyzing 17 documents from the UK, Canada, and Australia, the review identified four essential capability domains for APPs: Clinical Practice, Education, Research, and Leadership and Management. Despite commonalities found across the literature, variations in specific capabilities and differences in general registration requirements and capabilities highlight the necessity for a framework tailored to Australia’s paramedicine context. The review explores challenges and opportunities in standardising APP roles and advocates for further research and consultation to distinguish advanced practice from general practice, guiding APP education, regulation, and standardisation in Australia.
