999 EMS 2022 - Highest Quality Research prize winner - "Between a rock and a hard place": Care home staff perceptions of balancing risks during resident transfer decisions

Care home residents are frequently transferred and be admitted to hospital in unplanned, emergency situations, yet some transfers and admissions can be burdensome for both residents and healthcare services. A better understanding of the work that happens in the care home prior to a hospital transfer could lead to new insights into how to ensure residents receive the right care in the right place. In this session, Fawn will outline her ethnographic doctoral research which focussed on the decisions of care home staff, describing the different forms of risk that staff sought to manage during transfer decisions.

Biography: Dr Fawn Harrad-Hyde

Fawn recently completed her PhD in the UK at the University of Leicester, focussing on the decisions of care home staff when faced with residents who might need a transfer to hospital. Prior to completing her PhD, Fawn had worked in both research and care roles. Since completing her PhD, Fawn has been employed at the University of Leicester as a Research Associate, working closely with a local hospice and in the UK National Health Service, leading a small team of staff who support care home related research studies.
