The future of prehospital care in the Pacific

Delivering prehospital care in the pacific islands comes at great difficulty and cost. But to do nothing isn’t acceptable. Prehospital care has a role in in improving important health indicators like maternal and neonatal mortality rate. But can prehospital care be delivered cost-effectively?

Biography: Matt Cannon

Matt has 15 years of experience in emergency medical services, mass gathering medicine and health crisis management. He values the importance of building resilient health care systems that ensure people living in urban, rural, and remote areas can obtain good quality essential health care.

Over the last 8 years, he has served in Papua New Guinea as CEO of St John Ambulance, resetting the vision and strategic direction of the St John. During this period, St John revived and expanded the presence of good prehospital care systems in Papua New Guinea, including ground and aeromedical services. He is a Board Director of the Council of Ambulance Authorities Australasia, and Board Director of the National Capital District Health Authority. In 2018 he was awarded Officer of the Order of St John by the Queen.

In his free time Matt pursues dopamine rushes from scrolling social media, hiking, skiing, and finding great coffee.
