Clinical task shifting in the UAE: Supraglottic airway insertion, ETCO2 monitoring and diagnostic capnography in cardiac arrest contexts
This study focuses on the EMT-Bs use of capnography in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Method: 80 708 Patient Care Records over 12-months from an EMS in the UAE, were screened. Of 39 937 cases, 774 were CPR. Analysis of usage trends, bias, and outcomes was analysed. Results: ETCO2 was used on 52.2% (n = 404) of CPR cases. 54.77% (n = 692) were monitored with ETCO2 (p-value: 5.23×10-5). In CPR cases, 62.04% (n = 480) ROSC was observed with ETCO2 use (p-value: 0.0398). Conclusion: EMT-Bs can use capnography to guide resuscitation attempts and optimize ventilation with supra-glottic airways when advanced practitioners are not immediately available.
