On Friday 3 October, the Aotearoa New Zealand Student Paramedics Association (ANZSPA) hosted its annual simulation challenge at Whitireia’s Porirua Campus in Wellington. The ANZSPA Simulation Challenge brought together paramedicine students from across Aotearoa New Zealand for a day of high-fidelity clinical simulations, collaboration, and whakawhanaungatanga - developing relationships. The 2025 Simulation Challenge was a resounding success, offering students a unique opportunity to apply their clinical knowledge in realistic scenarios while building connections with peers from other institutions. The event was a testament to the power of student-led initiatives and the strength of the paramedicine community.

The AUT team, comprising students from various stages of their studies, demonstrated exceptional teamwork and professionalism. Team captain Flynn Powell described the experience as “unforgettable,” highlighting the value of learning from peers, navigating high-pressure scenarios, and engaging with students from other institutions. “This experience was unique and invaluable,” he said. “It has left me better prepared, both practically and mentally, for the challenges ahead.”
The event also provided a platform for Māori and Pacific Medics (MAPmedics) to connect and collaborate. Students shared how the challenge fostered a strong sense of community and offered culturally safe spaces to grow their clinical and teamwork skills. Whitireia students echoed these sentiments, describing the challenge as a highlight of their academic year, with the opportunity to connect with student paramedics from across the motu (land/country).

The success of the Simulation Challenge was made possible by the dedication of the ANZSPA Executive Committee, particularly Melissa Clark, Farryn McGregor-Smith, Jayden Upston, Aydn Wilson and the invaluable support of Whitireia staff, including Reuben Corlett. Their months of planning ensured a seamless and professional event. Thanks also to social media officer Juliska Coetzee and education officer Georgia Harris for their valuable contribution.
The ANZSPA Executive Committee extend their heartfelt thanks to the generous sponsors: Hato Hone St John Manukau Area Committee, the Australasian College of Paramedicine, and the Council of Ambulance Authorities. Their support enabled students from across the country to participate, removing financial barriers and fostering national collaboration.
As we reflect on the achievements of this year’s challenge, we look forward to the 2026 event, set to take place at AUT’s South Campus in Manukau. The ANZSPA Simulation Challenge continues to be a cornerstone of student development, inspiring the next generation of paramedics through shared learning, cultural connection, and clinical excellence.
