Little lives workshop: Paediatric and obstetric emergencies

About The Event

Join us for an intensive face-to-face workshop designed for paramedics and paramedic students. This limited seating workshop aims to improve your understanding of paediatric assessment and enhance your skills in managing paediatric emergencies and complicated birth presentations in the out of hospital environment. The program structure will consist of an informative, didactic session to refresh your knowledge on paediatrics and birthing, followed by a hands-on skills workshop and Q&A session with clinical experts.

This workshop will improve your ability to:

  • Identify and apply the fundamentals of age-appropriate paediatric assessment
  • Identify and differentiate abnormal assessment findings based on age-specific parameters
  • Discuss assessment findings and their relation to paediatric pathophysiology
  • Think critically and make sound clinical judgements
  • Identify and discuss the pathophysiology of complicated birth presentations and post partum haemorrhage
  • Apply appropriate techniques and interventions for managing complicated birth presentations and post partum haemorrhage

Speakers

Associate Professor Belinda Flanagan (PhD)

Associate Professor Belinda Flanagan brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned clinician in Nursing, Midwifery, and Paramedicine. Additionally, she serves as a committed Lecturer/Researcher with expertise spanning various clinical, educational, and public health domains. With a strong background in managing healthcare education across multiple modes of delivery, she adeptly handles a comprehensive range of managerial duties. Belinda also plays a crucial role in enhancing healthcare provision and education, extending her contributions to training both skilled and unskilled healthcare professionals in low-income regions.

Linda Truskett

Linda is a distinguished Clinical Nurse Consultant within the Virtual Clinical Care Centre, specialising in emergency paediatric nursing at Sydney Children’s Hospital for the past seven years. With a deep commitment to providing the highest level of care to young patients in critical situations, Linda has become a respected figure in paediatric emergency care. Linda has demonstrated exceptional expertise and leadership in managing complex paediatric cases throughout her career. She has been directly involved in education by developing and implementing protocols that enhance the quality and efficiency of emergency medical services for children. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to nursing and commitment to advancing healthcare, Linda was honoured with the prestigious Susan Wakil Scholarship from the University of Sydney School of Nursing. This accolade underscores her ongoing dedication to academic excellence and professional development in nursing.

Jonathon Hamilton

Jonathon has a background in emergency nursing where he has worked with adults and paediatric patients. He made the jump to only working with paediatrics in 2021 as the Clinical Nurse Educator at Mount Druitt Children's Ward. His passion is simulation-based education with a focus on recognising deterioration and developing non-technical skills. He has a Graduate Diploma in Emergency Nursing and Graduate Certificate in Paediatric Nursing.
