Transitioning from Student to Graduate Paramedic
Thursday 17th September 2020, 15:00 AEST
Join us for an ACP student focused event, discussing the transition from Univeristy student to on-road paramedic.
The speaker panel are graduates who have recently experienced the transition from student to paramedic. Our guest speakers are Brittany Shaw from NSW Ambulance, James Menzies from Ambulance Victoria and James Clemow from St John Ambulance NT. The panel will share their experiences and challenges faced during the transition and provide insights for future graduates.
James studied a dual degree of Paramedicine and Nursing at ACU in Ballarat. This year he was lucky enough to be one of four candidates selected for a program that combines both a nursing and paramedic grad year. The program is 18 months in total and so far, James has had 6 months on road with Ambulance Victoria and 3 months on a surgical ward at Ballarat Base hospital. Prior to Ambulance James had the dream to play AFL but quickly realised he wasn't anywhere skilful enough, tall enough and worked out that he had the body of a 70 year old. James now spends his days travelling, being a very amateur sports fan and wishing that COVID wasn't a thing. We will get through this! Have faith. James is looking forward to hearing all your questions and wants to thanks to the committee at ACP for putting this together!
James has lived in Alice Springs for over 6 years, where he started his career as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher. Upon completing his Bachelor of Paramedical Science in 2018, James was employed as a Graduate Paramedic. James has recently completed his graduate studies and become a Qualified Paramedic with St John Ambulance NT.
Britt is a current paramedic intern with New South Wales Ambulance Service, stationed in the North Coast region. Having completed her undergraduate studies in Queensland, she not only made the jump from student to paramedic, but also added the complexity of familiarization with an unknown state and service. For the past two years she held the position of QLD state coordinator with Student Paramedics Australasia; hosting multiple sold out workshops, education evenings and conferences to paramedic students around Australia. Currently studying a post graduate certificate in paramedicine with a critical care specialization, she is now trying to encompass her passion of creating opportunities for those around her whilst developing into a qualified clinician.
