In this course on structural heart disease, we delve into the different types of structural heart disease, examining the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations. We take a deeper look at aortic stenosis, review the transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedure for the management of valvular disease, and discuss the implications for paramedic practice.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Define structural heart diseases
  • Identify the types of structural heart diseases
  • Examine the pathophysiology of aortic stenosis
  • Apply your understanding of the pathophysiology of aortic stenosis to discuss the causes and clinical manifestations of aortic stenosis
  • Describe the assessment and diagnostic findings of aortic stenosis
  • Apply your understanding of the pathophysiology of structural heart disease to identify how it can impact paramedic assessment and management
  • Examine the treatment and management strategies for aortic stenosis.
