Module 3: Management of shoulder dystocia

Module 3: Management of shoulder dystocia

About

Shoulder dystocia is where the baby becomes mechanically caught in the pelvis. Our own fear when attempting to resolve shoulder dystocia can cause a worsening of the situation. This module will provide detailed information about the presentation and management of shoulder dystocia.

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • Identify and distinguish variation from normal birth progression
  • Recognise and diagnose shoulder dystocia presentation
  • Plan and manage interventions that facilitate the birth of the baby
  • Manage out-of-hospital care of the newborn immediately after birth and prepare for possible resuscitation
  • Provide appropriate support for the birthing person and their support family
  • Assess, manage and evaluate ongoing care of the birthing person and newborn during transport.

(Please note: While this module will work on a mobile device, for the best experience we recommend viewing it on a desktop device. But stay tuned — we are working on a more mobile-friendly experience.)
