Extended Care Paramedics/Relief (ECP) - Permanent - Hamilton, Mt Taranaki and Christchurch Metro

We are seeking applications from operational paramedics who would be interested in gaining ATP of Extended Care Paramedic (ECP) to support St John and the wider health sector.

Becoming an ECP is an excellent opportunity to utilise your skills and knowledge in community paramedicine, improve outcomes for patients with non-urgent injuries and illnesses and play an important role in helping to reduce the pressure on the emergency ambulances and the wider health sector.

You will be rostered onto a Romeo unit (formerly known as Sierra units) or as a relief, you will work as an ambulance-based ECP and provide relief cover on Romeo units as required.

Location and role breakdown:

  • In Hamilton we are looking for four ECPs, three ECPs (open to all paramedics nationally) plus one ECP from within current FTE establishment in the Hamilton area (2 ECP and 2 Relief ECP)
  • In Mt Taranaki we are looking for one ECP from within current FTE establishment in the Mt Taranaki area, to provide relief ECP cover as required (1 Relief ECP)
  • In Christchurch Metro we are looking for two ECP from within current FTE establishment in the Chch Metro area, to provide relief ECP cover as required (2 Relief ECP)

Upskilling to ECP will mean committing to the following requirements:

  • Attending an initial five-day 'Introduction to ECP course' facilitated by the St John medical directorate (You must be available 19-23 October).
  • Successfully undertake 32 hours of clinical placement within primary care, attending a follow-up education day after three months of practice and immediately commencing study towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science that includes designated ECP papers.
  • Establishment of a collegial relationship with a health professional in primary care and reflection on cases in My SitRep.
  • Contributing to ongoing service improvement, i.e. supporting ongoing enhancements to the ECP model.

The recruitment process will involve a behavioural style interview with a panel of two managers from Operations and Clinical Development.

Please note: all appointments are subject to satisfactory completion of pre-employment checks including, but not limited to, drug testing, physical assessment and health check. For clinical operations roles where you are required to drive, you will be required to meet the NZTA medical standards associated with a Class 2/P endorsement on a NZ driver license.
