Frontline Fundamentals: Paramedic Skills Workshop

About The Event

Join us at ACU Ballarat for a full-day, hands-on learning experience designed to sharpen your clinical skills and strengthen your confidence across three core areas of paramedic practice.

Airway – ALS Scope of Practice

  • Back to basics: airway anatomy and fundamentals
  • Airway techniques and troubleshooting
  • Overview of ALS-level airway equipment
  • Why airway management is critical and how to get it right under pressure

Obstetrics – Midwife-Led Session

  • Realistic birthing scenarios and case discussions
  • Hands-on practice with birth manoeuvres and recognising types of births
  • Identifying complications and when to escalate
  • Key resources and supports available in the field

Trauma – Real-Life Ambulance Approach

  • Assessing what needs to be done before moving a patient
  • What can wait until transport and why
  • Working safely within ALS guidelines
  • Early sitrep and requesting appropriate backup

Speakers

Catherine Mackay

Cat Mackay began her paramedicine career with Ambulance Victoria in 2012, following earlier studies and work in Traditional Chinese Medicine, massage, and sports training. She has worked as an ALS Paramedic in both rural Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne, before spending several years as a MICA Paramedic in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

In late 2023, Cat transitioned to the Air Ambulance as a MICA Flight Paramedic. Alongside her clinical practice, she has held a variety of educational and leadership roles within Ambulance Victoria, including Clinical Instructor, Paramedic Educator, and MICA Programs Facilitator and Assessor.

Cat is passionate about mentoring and collaboration, with a strong belief in the value of sharing knowledge and experience across colleagues, services, and professions — both within Australia and internationally.
