Talking Research: Regulation Research

About The Event

In this Talking Research, we will be diving into the research that underpins paramedicine regulation. We are being joined by three experts within regulation research in paramedicine, Dr Ruth Townsend, Buck Reed and Derek Collings-Hughes. Ruth will be presenting on why regulation is needed for health professionals, Derek will touch on the relevance of his research on professional codes in paramedicine, and Buck will be discussing the findings of his PhD the impact of paramedic registration on paramedic identity.

Speakers

Buck Reed

Buck Reed is a paramedic who has practiced for over 20 years in various areas of prehospital care including event medical services, industrial paramedicine and for the last fifteen years as a qualified ambulance paramedic. Buck has clinical experience in both metropolitan and rural areas with a special interest in Community Paramedicine. Buck was the first paramedic chosen for the NSW Health Rural Research Capacity Building Program producing comprehensive analyses of unmet ambulance need in rural areas. Buck was the first rural paramedic to be selected for a Churchill Fellowship during which he visited Canada and the US to explore the development of community paramedicine in those countries. Buck holds a Masters of International Health Management and is currently a PhD candidate examining the impact of paramedic registration on paramedic identity. Twitter: @Buck_Reed

Derek Collings-Hughes

Derek is an experienced registered paramedic from Western Australia. Derek started his career in New Zealand as an EMT, before moving to Australia and completing his undergraduate degree at Curtin University in WA. He has since developed a keen interest in paramedic research and as such completed an honours programme at Monash University investigating how paramedics use their professional code of conduct. Derek is also a sessional lecturer and is just starting his PhD journey at Curtin University. Twitter: @DCollingsHughes

Dr Ruth Townsend

Ruth has practised as both a paramedic and a lawyer. She has been an academic specialising in the area of health law, ethics and human rights and wrote the first text on Paramedic Law and Ethics. With respect to paramedic research, Ruth has published many papers on paramedic issues and completed her PhD titled, ‘The role of the law in the professionalisation of paramedicine in Australia’. Ruth is currently the legal member of the Paramedicine Council of NSW, the state regulatory body, but continues to supervise students researching in the paramedic law and ethics space. Kirsty Shearer

Kirsty Shearer is a paramedic with twenty years on road experience in various clinical roles, Kirsty moved into academia in 2015 at CQUniversity and teaches on the postgraduate paramedic science courses covering critical care and primary health care paramedic practice. Kirsty is also currently doing a PhD and is exploring the importance of practical wisdom and practical ethics in undergraduate paramedic education.
